Villa Almada is a two-bedroom villa with a private swimming pool at 539 Rua do Almada, in the historic centre of Porto. It accommodates seven guests plus two infants across two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and is let on an exclusive-use basis, so the building and its garden are reserved for a single party.
The property occupies a walled plot in the União de Freguesias do Centro, within walking distance of the shops, restaurants and the riverfront. Alongside the pool there is a dining terrace with a gas barbecue, a gourmet kitchen and an open living and dining area. A private pool of this kind is uncommon in a central city location, where comparable villas are usually found outside the main urban area.
This guide sets out the villa’s layout and facilities, what is provided for families travelling with young children, how the villa compares with the other Espais Roca properties in Porto, and what to confirm before booking. For larger parties, the Merchant Townhouse in Porto accommodates significantly more guests and is compared further down.
Where Villa Almada Is: Rua do Almada in Porto’s Old Town

Rua do Almada runs through the middle of Porto, parallel to the busier Rua dos Clérigos and a short walk from Avenida dos Aliados. It is a working street rather than a tourist one, which is the point: you are inside the city rather than looking at it from a hillside twenty minutes out. The villa sits behind its own gate at number 539.
The central location removes the need to plan around transport. Breakfast is served on site, restaurants are within walking distance, and the principal sights are close enough to reach on foot. The São Bento station, the Clérigos tower and the Ribeira are all within an easy walk, and the Luís I bridge across to the Gaia port lodges is only a little further.
As with any city-centre property, there is daytime street noise and parking is on-street rather than in a private driveway. In exchange, the villa is within a short walk of restaurants, which is useful for families with young children who need an early evening.
What is walkable from the villa
- Avenida dos Aliados — Porto’s central boulevard and the city hall.
- Livraria Lello and the Clérigos tower — the two busiest sights in the centre.
- São Bento station — the tiled hall, and the line out toward the Douro Valley.
- Mercado do Bolhão — the covered market, useful if you are cooking.
- The Ribeira and the Luís I bridge — downhill, and a steeper walk back.
One practical note on the geography. Porto is built on a gorge, and almost nothing in the centre is flat. Walking distances on a map underestimate the effort, particularly with a pushchair. The return climb from the river is steep, and taxis and ride-hailing services are widely used at the end of the day.
Villa Almada at a Glance: Rooms, Pool and Capacity
The villa takes seven guests plus two infants. That is two bedrooms and two bathrooms, which is a deliberate ratio: it is built for one family, or two couples with children, rather than for a large group splitting the cost. The sleeping arrangement is the first thing to check against your party, because seven people in two bedrooms means someone is sharing.
Everything else is scaled for a household rather than a hotel room. There is a full gourmet kitchen, a living and dining space, a dining terrace outside with a gas barbecue, and the pool. The villa is let on an exclusive-use basis, so the building and the outdoor space are yours for the stay.

Two entries in the table are worth highlighting. The equipment for infants is provided at no additional charge rather than as a chargeable extra, and breakfast is served on site, which is unusual for a self-catering property and is the feature guests mention most frequently in reviews.
The Private Pool and Outdoor Space

The pool is private and enclosed, set against the villa so that the indoor and outdoor spaces open into one another when the doors are folded back. It is reserved for the party staying at the villa and is not shared with hotel guests.
A dining terrace and a built-in gas barbecue sit alongside it, which allows at least one meal a day to be taken at the villa and makes it straightforward to feed children earlier than the adults. The garden is fully walled, an advantage for families travelling with toddlers.
Porto’s swimming season is shorter than the Algarve’s. June to September is reliable, May and early October are a gamble, and the winter months are for looking at rather than swimming in. If the pool is the main reason you are booking, book inside that window rather than at the edges of it.
Villa Almada for Families: Cots, High Chairs and What Is Provided
The villa is equipped for young children to a standard that is uncommon in rental property. Two travel cots are provided at no charge, together with high chairs, baby plates and cutlery. None of these items is a chargeable extra.
For older children there is an Xbox, a smart TV with children’s Netflix and on-demand channels, board games and toys. These provisions matter on days when the weather is poor. Porto receives rain throughout the year, including during the summer months.
Provided for families, at no extra cost
- Two baby cots — so a family of four with two infants does not need to hire anything.
- Baby high chairs — plus baby plates and cutlery.
- Toys and board games — for the afternoons that do not go to plan.
- Kids’ Netflix and on-demand channels — already set up on the smart TV.
- Xbox — which mostly matters for the ten-to-fifteen bracket.
- An enclosed garden — the pool area is walled rather than open to the street.
The villa is not a resort and does not provide a children’s club, childcare or an organised activity programme. It offers a private house, a pool and the equipment a family travelling with young children is likely to require, with Porto itself forming the rest of the itinerary.
The Kitchen, Living Space and Design

The kitchen is fully equipped rather than a compact galley, which makes self-catering practical over a longer stay and can reduce the cost of a week considerably. The Mercado do Bolhão is close enough for a proper shop.
The interiors were done as a single project rather than assembled over time. The furniture is bespoke and handcrafted, and the artwork was chosen for the rooms rather than bought as a set. The result is a residential interior rather than a standard rental fit-out.
A smart speaker provides music, and the living space is arranged around the terrace doors so that the garden and pool form part of the room when they are open. In warm weather the interior and the terrace function as a single space.
Villa Almada and Canto de Luz Boutique Hotel
Villa Almada sits within the grounds of Canto de Luz, a boutique hotel occupying the same site, which lists the villa among its accommodation. Guests staying at the villa have access to the hotel’s services. Breakfast is prepared on site and served at the table, either in the Orangerie and winter garden or on the dining terrace, and is included in the rate together with daily housekeeping.
The arrangement combines a self-catering property with hotel service. The villa has its own entrance, kitchen, garden and pool, while reception, housekeeping and breakfast are provided by the hotel a short distance across the garden. Staff are on site for the duration of a stay, and guest reviews refer frequently to their assistance with local recommendations and restaurant reservations.
The wider property is worth understanding when planning a booking. Canto de Luz has six suites with panoramic windows overlooking either the cobbled street or the garden, together with three apartment suites that have their own kitchens and dining areas. Most suites are fitted with super-king beds of 180cm that separate into twins, and single sofa beds throughout the property allow rooms to be adapted for families. Additional accommodation is therefore available on the same site should a party grow.
The hotel also administers the practical elements of a stay. Check-in and check-out are available at any hour, each room has a safe large enough for a laptop, and the wireless network covers the garden as well as the buildings. Music streaming is provided in the kitchen and suites. Travel cots, high chairs, children’s cutlery and plates, a baby listener and children’s television channels form part of the same service and are not restricted to the villa.
The garden separates the villa from the street, and guests describe the setting as quiet despite its central position. Full details of the hotel’s rooms, rates and services are set out on the Canto de Luz property page.
Villa Almada Photo Gallery
The villa photographs well, but the thing the pictures do not convey is how enclosed it is. Every outdoor shot below is taken inside the walls, a few minutes from Avenida dos Aliados.

Villa Almada Compared With the Other Porto Properties
Villa Almada is one of three Porto properties in the collection, and they are genuinely different rather than three sizes of the same thing. Choosing between them is mostly a question of how many people you are and whether the pool is the point.
The Urban Retreat is a private two-bedroom apartment with a patio, set inside Canto de Luz itself. It suits smaller groups who want the same central location and the same breakfast without needing a pool or a garden. At the other end, the Merchant Townhouse is a very large property built for weddings, family reunions and groups, with staff, and on exclusive use it takes Villa Almada in with it.
| Property | Sleeps | Private pool | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa Almada | 7 plus 2 infants | Yes | One family, or two couples with children, who want a pool in the centre |
| Urban Retreat Porto | 9 | No | Smaller groups wanting the central location and breakfast without a garden |
| Merchant Townhouse | Large groups, with staff | Shared on exclusive use | Weddings, reunions and multi-family groups |
If your group is bigger than Villa Almada takes, the sensible move is not to squeeze. The Merchant Townhouse is the property built for that, and because an exclusive-use booking includes Villa Almada, a large group can have the townhouse and the pool at once. For a wider view of what villa options in the city look like, our guide to villas in Porto with a private pool compares the alternatives.
Is Villa Almada in the Douro Valley?
No. Villa Almada is in central Porto, on Rua do Almada. The Douro Valley, where the port vineyards are situated, begins approximately one hundred kilometres upriver and is reached as a day trip rather than a base.
The confusion is common. Porto stands on the Douro river and the port lodges across the water in Gaia store wine produced in the valley, which leads the two to be conflated. A property in the Douro Valley, however, is surrounded by terraced vineyards and is a considerable drive from restaurants and services.
If the valley is what you want to see, it is very doable from here. The train from São Bento up the Douro line is one of the better railway journeys in Europe, and there are river cruises from Porto that run up and back in a day. Staying in the city and visiting the valley is, for most families, a better arrangement than the reverse.
Booking Villa Almada: Check-in, Flexibility and What to Ask
Arrival is handled in one of two ways. Guests are normally met in person and shown around the property. Where an arrival is late or timings change, self check-in is available using a personalised access code.
Check-in and check-out times are flexible where the calendar allows, which is worth asking about rather than assuming. On a stay that starts with an early-morning flight, a few hours either side changes the first and last day of a holiday considerably.
Worth asking before you book
- The sleeping plan — seven people across two bedrooms needs confirming against your party.
- Pool season — if swimming is the point, aim for June to September.
- Arrival time — flexible where the calendar allows, but ask rather than assume.
- Cots and high chairs — free, but confirm how many you need.
- Parking — this is a city-centre street, so ask what the options are if you are hiring a car.
- Larger groups — ask about the Merchant Townhouse, which includes the villa on exclusive use.
Porto’s peak runs from June through September, and the villa is a single property rather than a block of rooms, so only one party can occupy it at a time. For school-holiday dates, several months’ notice is advisable.
