- October half term is 19 to 23 October in most Leicestershire schools and 26 to 30 October in Northamptonshire council schools.
- Our 14 Acres estate at Clipston is about 10 to 15 minutes from Market Harborough and roughly 15 minutes from the showground.
Late October and early November are some of our favourite weeks on the estate. The leaves turn, the evenings draw in, and within half an hour of our front door there are bonfires, fireworks, pumpkin patches and castle Halloween trails. Our three holiday homes sit together at Rectory Farm in Clipston, on the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire border, and the market town of Market Harborough is only 10 to 15 minutes away by car.
For 2026 the timing is especially kind to families. Halloween falls on a Saturday, the Market Harborough fireworks display is on the Wednesday after, and Bonfire Night itself is on Thursday 5 November, so a long half-term stay can take in pumpkin picking, a castle trail and a proper bonfire. Groups of up to six often choose The Loft as a base, while larger families spread out in The Barn.
Every date, time and price in our list comes from the organiser, the venue or the local council. Where an event has not yet published its 2026 details, we say so clearly and give last year’s arrangements as a guide only. Drive times are measured from Clipston (LE16 9RF) and are approximate, so allow extra time on busy fireworks evenings when car parks fill early.
What Is Bonfire Night? Guy Fawkes Night Traditions Near Market Harborough

Bonfire Night, also called Guy Fawkes Night, is held across Britain every year on 5 November. It marks the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators led by Robert Catesby planned to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament and kill King James I. Guy Fawkes was caught late on 4 November guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar beneath the House of Lords, and the plot collapsed.
Parliament passed an act the following January making the anniversary a day of thanksgiving, and it stayed on the statute book until 1859. Over the centuries the church bells and sermons gave way to bonfires, and by the 1670s effigies of Guy Fawkes were being burned on top of them. Children later carried a home-made “guy” through the streets, and the day became the noisy, smoky, cheerful evening we know today.
Most towns and villages now gather at an organised display rather than lighting fires in their own gardens. A typical evening near Market Harborough starts with a funfair or a hot food stall, moves on to the lighting of a large bonfire, and ends with a fireworks display of around half an hour. Many organisers now add an early, quieter display for toddlers and anyone who dislikes loud bangs.
Bonfire Night traditions at a glance
- A large community bonfire, often lit around 7pm.
- A fireworks display, usually after the bonfire is lit.
- Sparklers for older children, held at arm’s length and wearing gloves.
- Bonfire toffee, also called treacle toffee, made with black treacle.
- Parkin, a sticky oatmeal and ginger cake from the north of England.
- Jacket potatoes, sausages and hot drinks to keep everyone warm.
Bonfire Night is one of the few evenings of the year when whole communities stand together in a field in the dark, and we think that is a big part of its charm. Wrap up well, bring a torch and wellies for muddy showgrounds, and agree a meeting point with older children before the fireworks start.
Bonfire Night 2026 Date: When Are the Fireworks Near Market Harborough?

Bonfire Night 2026 falls on Thursday 5 November. Because the date lands midweek, most of the big public displays around Market Harborough are spread across the days either side of it, from Saturday 31 October to Saturday 7 November. That gives visitors a choice of at least one display almost every evening of a week-long stay.
The first weekend is the busiest. Daventry holds its free display on Halloween itself, Saturday 31 October, and Northampton Town Council stages its Fireworks Spectacular at the Racecourse on Sunday 1 November with a Halloween theme. The Harborough Fireworks Spectacular follows on Wednesday 4 November, and the following Saturday, 7 November, brings Wicksteed Park in Kettering and the Abbey Park display in Leicester.
| Bonfire Night week 2026 | Fireworks near Market Harborough |
|---|---|
| Saturday 31 October (Halloween) | Daventry Town Council fireworks, free |
| Sunday 1 November | Northampton Fireworks Spectacular, The Racecourse |
| Wednesday 4 November | Harborough Fireworks Spectacular, Harborough Showground |
| Thursday 5 November (Bonfire Night) | Village displays listed at Stoney Cove and the Cow & Plough, Oadby |
| Saturday 7 November | Wicksteed Park, Kettering, and Abbey Park, Leicester |
If you can only manage a weekend, the Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November weekend combines Halloween with two big displays. For a midweek break, arriving on Monday 2 November and leaving on Saturday 7 November lets you see the Harborough display, enjoy Bonfire Night itself and finish with a Saturday display before heading home.
One practical point: most organisers run their displays in all weathers, but strong winds can delay or cancel fireworks on the day. We always suggest checking the organiser’s social media pages in the afternoon before you set off.

1. Harborough Fireworks Spectacular
Our nearest display is the Harborough Fireworks Spectacular on Wednesday 4 November 2026 at Harborough Showground, Gallow Field Road, Market Harborough (LE16 7QB). Gates, the funfair, food stalls and the bar open at 4pm, and rides cost £2 until 5pm. A low-noise display for children starts at 6pm, the bonfire is lit at 7pm, and the main fireworks run from 7.30pm to 8pm, with the fairground open until 9pm.
Adult tickets (16 and over) cost £12, children aged 5 to 15 cost £6, and under 5s go free; tickets are sold online through the organiser. Parking on site is free, including blue badge bays, and the event runs rain or shine, so waterproofs and sturdy boots are a good idea. You can bring a picnic, but personal alcohol is not allowed, and there is a licensed bar and street food on the field. It is about 15 minutes from the estate, which makes it the easiest fireworks evening of the week for families with young children.
2. Northampton Fireworks Spectacular
Northampton Town Council holds its Fireworks Spectacular at The Racecourse on Sunday 1 November 2026, billed this year as a Halloween Special. Family entertainment starts at 4pm and the fireworks finale is at 6pm, an early finish that suits younger children and school nights. Last year the council described it as a large-scale free event, with charges only for funfair rides, food and activity stalls.
The 2026 page does not state a price, so check closer to the date. In 2025 the council also ran a free wristband scheme, where parents wrote a phone number on a band for each child in case anyone became separated in the crowd. The Racecourse is about 30 minutes from Clipston, and arriving by 4.30pm gives you time to park and find a good spot.
3. Daventry Fireworks on Halloween
Daventry Town Council’s free display takes place on Saturday 31 October 2026 at The Parker E-ACT Academy, Ashby Road (NN11 0QF). Gates open at 6pm, last entry is 7.15pm and the fireworks begin at 7.30pm, with hot food and drinks from 6pm to 9pm. The council encourages Halloween costumes this year, so it doubles as a family Halloween night out.
Because the venue is a school site, there are firm rules: no sparklers, no alcohol, no smoking or vaping, no large bags, and no dogs other than registered assistance dogs. Bags are checked at the gate, so allow a little extra time. Daventry is about 30 minutes from the estate.
4. Wicksteed Park Fireworks, Kettering
Wicksteed Park in Kettering holds its Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday 7 November 2026, with live stage entertainment and attractions from 5pm before the display. Early bird tickets cost £6 per person until 31 October 2026, then £7 per person from 1 November until the night. Parking is free from 5pm on a first come, first served basis.
The park’s Carousel and Sway Rider cost £3.50 per ride, and a travelling funfair has its own charges. Hot chocolate and food are sold at the Garden Café, Carlo’s Courtyard and mobile food units. The park is about 25 minutes from Clipston, and it is a good choice for the final Saturday of a Bonfire Night week.
5. Abbey Park Bonfire and Fireworks, Leicester
Leicester City Council’s festivals team runs the city’s biggest Bonfire Night event at Abbey Park (LE4 5AQ), and Visit Leicester lists it for Saturday 7 November 2026. The event features two fireworks displays, a family-friendly early show and a main display, plus live music, performers and a funfair. Gate times, display times and prices for 2026 had not been published when we checked.
As a guide, in 2025 gates opened at 5pm, the displays were at 6.45pm and 8pm, and tickets were sold in advance only with no cash sales at the gate. Abbey Park is about 45 minutes from the estate, so it suits older children and adults happy with a later night.
6. Village Bonfire Night Displays in Leicestershire on 5 November
If you want to be at a bonfire on the night itself, Visit Leicester lists two displays on Thursday 5 November 2026. Stoney Cove opens its gates at 6pm with the display at 7.30pm, and gate prices are £15 for adults and £10 for children. The Cow & Plough pub in Oadby opens from 6pm, lights its bonfire at 7pm and starts its fireworks at 7.30pm, with tickets at £10 per person and under 5s free.
Some familiar displays had no 2026 details when we checked. Corby’s council-run bonfire is under review, with North Northamptonshire Council in talks with local groups about a possible display, and the Rugby Round Table display had not announced a date. We will update the list as organisers confirm.
Halloween Near Market Harborough: Castles, Trails and Spooky Trains

Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, and the countryside around Market Harborough fills up with family events in the week before. Country houses run trails and pumpkin patches, a heritage railway dresses its trains for the night, and Leicester puts on a free city trail. Most of these events are ticketed with set arrival times, so we would book the ones you want before you travel.
Rockingham Castle, about 30 minutes from Clipston above the Welland Valley, holds Halloween Fun from Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October 2026, with spooky activities led by the castle’s witches and wizards. The event starts at 11am, the castle opens at 11.30am with last entry at 3pm, and the grounds close at 4pm. Pre-booking is recommended because tickets are limited, parking is included in the ticket, and Historic Houses membership is not accepted for this event.
Boughton House near Kettering, about 30 minutes away, runs Halloween at Boughton from 24 to 31 October, with morning or afternoon sessions every day of half term. The Duke’s Magical Maze and Menagerie is an outdoor riddle trail with Halloween games, and children then pick a Boughton-grown pumpkin from the patch. A child ticket costs £12, booked online, and includes two adults and a £3 pumpkin token.
Closer still, the Northampton & Lamport Railway at Pitsford and Brampton station (NN6 8BA), about 20 minutes from the estate, runs Hocus Pocus Trains on Saturday 31 October from 1pm to 4pm and Sunday 1 November from 11am to 3pm, departing on the hour. On Halloween night the Eerie Night Express leaves at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm for an after-dark ride. Every child receives a treat, fancy dress is encouraged, and parking is free.
| Halloween event 2026 | Dates | Price | Approx. drive from Clipston |

| Halloween Fun, Rockingham Castle | 28 to 31 October, 11am to 4pm | Book online; parking included | About 30 minutes |
| Halloween at Boughton, Boughton House | 24 to 31 October, morning or afternoon slots | £12 per child, includes 2 adults and £3 pumpkin token | About 30 minutes |

| Room on the Broom Corn Maze, Twycross Zoo | 3 October to 1 November, daily | £5 per child plus zoo entry | About 1 hour |
| Leicester Monster Trail | 22 to 31 October | Free | About 40 minutes |
| Spooky Space, National Space Centre, Leicester | 17 October to 1 November | Standard admission | About 45 minutes |
Leicester has plenty for a rainy half-term day. Visit Leicester lists a free Leicester Monster Trail around city landmarks from 22 to 31 October and Spooky Space at the National Space Centre from 17 October to 1 November. Further out, Twycross Zoo’s Room on the Broom corn maze runs daily from 3 October to 1 November 2026, priced at £5 per child on top of zoo entry, with a tote bag for collecting sweets.
Wicksteed Park in Kettering has run a Halloween Haunt on October weekends and through half term in recent years, but its 2026 dates and prices had not been published when we checked, so look at the park’s website before planning around it. In Market Harborough itself, the council lists an Artisan Fair on The Square on Saturday 31 October from 9am to 4pm.
Planning a Halloween or Bonfire Night break for 2026?
The Loft, The Barn and The Cottage sit together at Clipston, about 15 minutes from the Market Harborough fireworks and 30 minutes from Rockingham Castle.

Pumpkin picking has become an October ritual for many families, and Northamptonshire has several farms within easy reach of the estate. The closest is West Lodge Farm Park on Back Lane, Desborough (NN14 2SH), about 15 minutes from Clipston. Its pumpkin festival is listed for 10 and 11 October and then every day from 17 to 31 October 2026, with the pumpkin patch open from 10am to 4pm.
Entry to West Lodge is listed as free, with pumpkins priced individually and booking made in advance online. The festival programme includes wand making, a cobweb walkthrough, a ghost story and a spooky tractor ride for a small extra charge. Boughton House’s pumpkin patch is the other easy option, with a £3 pumpkin token included in every £12 child ticket for Halloween at Boughton.
Further south, two farms near Northampton publish 2026 pumpkin seasons on family listings. Overstone Grange Farm grows around 90 varieties of pumpkins and gourds, opens at weekends from late September and daily from 24 October until 31 October, and adds torchlit evening picking. Wappenham Farm opens from 10 to 31 October with twilight sessions on 23, 24, 30 and 31 October, at £7.50 per person with pumpkins charged separately.
Pumpkin picking checklist
- Book a time slot in advance, as weekend sessions sell out in the last week of October.
- Wear wellies: pumpkin fields are working farmland and can be very muddy.
- Bring a bag or a small trolley, as large pumpkins are heavy to carry back to the car.
- Take a card and some cash, since pumpkins are usually priced by size.
- Pack a knife-safe carving kit and newspaper for carving back at the house.
Farm dates can change with the weather and the harvest, so we always suggest checking the farm’s own booking page the day before. A carved pumpkin on the doorstep of The Cottage or on the courtyard table at The Barn is a lovely way to finish the day, and the seeds roast nicely in the oven while the children carve.
October Half Term Near Market Harborough: Dates and Itinerary

October half term falls in two different weeks either side of the county border this year. Most Leicestershire schools, including those in Market Harborough, break up for half term from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October 2026. Schools under West Northamptonshire and North Northamptonshire councils take their half term a week later, from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, returning on Monday 2 November.
Academies, free schools and some faith schools can set their own dates, so it is worth checking with your child’s school. For families from Northamptonshire and anywhere else with a late-October break, the timing is ideal: the week of 26 October brings Boughton, Rockingham and Halloween itself, and the fireworks start the following weekend.
| Day | Half-term plan near Market Harborough | Approx. drive |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday 29 October | Morning slot at Halloween at Boughton, then pumpkin carving back at the estate | About 30 minutes |
| Friday 30 October | Halloween Fun at Rockingham Castle, lunch in the Walkers House tea room | About 30 minutes |
| Saturday 31 October | Artisan Fair on The Square, then the Eerie Night Express or Daventry fireworks | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Sunday 1 November | Autumn walk, then Northampton Fireworks Spectacular at 6pm | About 30 minutes |
Leave room for slower days too. A walk around Welland Park in Market Harborough is an easy morning with children, and the town’s independent shops and cafés are a gentle way to spend a wet afternoon. Families who stay on into the second week of November can add the Harborough display on Wednesday 4 November and Bonfire Night itself.
For Leicestershire families whose half term ends on 23 October, the October weekends still work well. Twycross Zoo’s maze and West Lodge’s pumpkin patch are open on the weekend of 24 and 25 October, and Boughton’s Halloween trail opens on Saturday 24 October.
Bonfire Night and Halloween Food to Enjoy Near Market Harborough

Bonfire Night has its own small menu of traditional treats. Bonfire toffee, also called treacle toffee or Plot toffee, is a hard, brittle toffee made from black treacle, sugar and butter, and it has been linked with 5 November for generations. Parkin is a dense cake of oatmeal, black treacle and ginger from the north of England, baked hard and left in a tin for a few days until it turns soft and sticky. In Leeds, 5 November was once known as “Parkin Night”.
Around the bonfire, the food is simple and warming: jacket potatoes cooked in foil, sausages in bread rolls, toffee apples and mugs of soup or hot chocolate. Halloween adds pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin seeds and plenty of sweets for trick-or-treaters. Most organised displays near Market Harborough have hot food stalls, but a flask of soup in the car is never a bad idea on a cold night.
| Seasonal food | What it is | When to eat it |
|---|---|---|
| Bonfire toffee | Brittle toffee made with black treacle | Bonfire Night and Halloween |
| Parkin | Oatmeal, treacle and ginger cake | Bonfire Night |
| Toffee apples | Apples on a stick coated in hard toffee | Halloween and Bonfire Night |
| Jacket potatoes | Potatoes baked in their skins | Round the bonfire |
| Pumpkin soup | Soup made from the flesh of carved pumpkins | Halloween week |
For ingredients, Farndon Fields Farm Shop on the edge of Market Harborough grows more than 40 kinds of fresh produce and has a bakery and grocery, open Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. The Market Harborough Farmers Market is held on The Square on Thursday 5 November 2026, Bonfire Night itself, from 9am to 3pm, which makes it easy to pick up local produce for a Bonfire Night supper.
Back at the estate, our kitchens are fully equipped for a Bonfire Night supper, and The Barn and The Cottage both have a gas barbecue outside for the sausages. We leave breakfast basics of bread, butter, jam, milk and cereal for your arrival, so the first morning is easy before you head out to the shops.
Bonfire Night Safety and Fireworks Rules Near Market Harborough
An organised display is the safest way to enjoy fireworks, and it is the only way to see a large bonfire without lighting one yourself. If you buy fireworks for home, the law is clear. According to the UK government’s fireworks guidance, you must be 18 or over to buy adult fireworks, and it is illegal to set them off between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night, when the cut-off is midnight.
Sparklers count as fireworks too. Registered sellers can sell them for private use between 15 October and 10 November, and they must not be set off or thrown in the street or other public places. Several displays near Market Harborough, including Daventry’s, do not allow sparklers on site at all, while others sell them on the night, so check each organiser’s rules before you go.
Fireworks night essentials
- Warm layers, hats, gloves and waterproof boots for muddy fields.
- A small torch for walking back to the car park.
- Ear defenders for babies, toddlers and noise-sensitive children.
- Gloves for anyone holding a sparkler, and a bucket of water for used ones.
- An agreed meeting point if the group is separated in the crowd.
- Your printed or mobile ticket, as several displays sell in advance only.
We always recommend the organised displays to our guests, since they come with trained crews, proper safety zones and a far bigger show than any garden box of rockets. One note for dog owners: our insurers do not allow pets in any of the properties, with the exception of guide dogs, so please make arrangements for pets before a Bonfire Night stay with us.
Bonfire Night and Half-Term Breaks at the 14 Acres Estate
Our three holiday homes stand together on a private 14-acre estate at Rectory Farm, Clipston (LE16 9RF), each converted from a Victorian farm building. Market Harborough and its showground are 10 to 15 minutes away, Northampton, Daventry, Kettering and the Northampton & Lamport Railway are all within about 30 minutes, and Leicester is about 40 minutes. That puts every fireworks display in our list within an easy evening drive.
Every home has underfloor heating, air conditioning, fast fibre wifi and a Type 2 EV charger, which all matter after a cold night in a field. Check-in is from 4pm, and keyless entry with a personal door code makes a late return from the fireworks easy. Families travelling together often book two homes side by side, so grandparents and cousins can share Bonfire Night without sharing a bathroom.
| Property | Sleeps | Bedrooms | Size | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Loft | 6 plus 2 infants | 2 | 135 m² | £150 a night |

Couples and small families looking at The Cottage will find its full floorplan and photographs on the property page, alongside those for The Loft and The Barn.
The Loft: A Bonfire Night Base for Six
The Loft is a converted Victorian stable of 135 square metres, clad in timber, with a glass dining balcony overlooking the pond on the estate. You enter on the ground floor, where a boot bench and coat hooks wait by the door for muddy wellies after a fireworks night, and climb to an open living space with a full-height triangular window onto the fields.
Both bedrooms have 180cm super king beds that can be split into twins, each with its own en-suite, and there is a sofa bed in the lounge for a sixth guest. Hypnos mattresses, Egyptian cotton linen and walk-in rain showers make the mornings after a late display easy, and the family en-suite has a full bath for little ones.
For wet half-term afternoons there is a 49-inch smart TV with Netflix and Disney+, an Xbox for older children and a popcorn maker for film nights. A utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer deals with muddy coats, and free parking for two cars sits right outside.

The Barn: Half-Term and Bonfire Night Breaks for Eight
The Barn is our largest home, a converted Victorian barn of 160 square metres that sleeps eight plus two infants. All three bedrooms have 180cm super king beds, one of which splits into twins, and there is a sofa bed in the living room. Everything is on one level with wide doors, which makes it a good choice when grandparents join a half-term trip.
The heart of the house is a long open-plan room with a 10-metre folding glass wall onto a private courtyard garden. Outside there is an outdoor kitchen with a gas barbecue and a table for eight, which is perfect for a sausage supper before setting off to the Wicksteed Park or Harborough displays. Inside, a 65-inch smart TV and a basket of toys keep everyone happy on a rainy afternoon.
The family bathroom has a rain shower over a large bath, the master en-suite has a step-free shower, and there is free parking for up to four cars. For a big family group sharing the driving between a castle trail, a pumpkin patch and a fireworks night, it is the easiest house on the estate.

The Cottage: A Bonfire Night Hideaway for Up to Four
The Cottage is a converted Victorian dovecote of 65 square metres for up to four guests, with views across rolling fields. Upstairs, the open-plan master suite has a 180cm super king bed that can split into two singles, a walk-in rain shower and a soaking bath, which is exactly where you want to be after standing round a bonfire.
Downstairs, the living room has a double sofa bed, so a couple can bring two children for a half-term break. Outside there is a private dining deck with a gas barbecue, and inside you have underfloor heating, double glazing and an Xbox and Netflix for film nights. Smart lock entry means a late return from the Eerie Night Express or the Abbey Park display is simple.
For couples, The Cottage makes a lovely midweek Bonfire Night escape: a market morning in Market Harborough on 5 November, a walk in the afternoon, and the fireworks after dark. Families of four will find it cosy for a short half-term stay.

A Note from Susan
“Half term and Bonfire Night are some of the happiest weeks on the estate. Families come back from the fireworks with muddy boots and pink cheeks, and the next morning the children are carving pumpkins at the kitchen table. Book the displays early, and leave a day free just to enjoy the countryside.”
