Best Christmas Markets in the UK 2026: City Breaks from the East Midlands

At A Glance

The best Christmas markets in the UK for an East Midlands break in 2026 are Birmingham, Nottingham, Lincoln, Leicester, Burghley, Stamford, Market Harborough and York.

  • Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from 5 November to 24 December 2026 in Victoria Square and along New Street.
  • Nottingham Winter Wonderland opens in Old Market Square on 12 November 2026 with an ice rink, observation wheel and Ice Bar.
  • Burghley House Christmas Fair runs from 26 to 29 November 2026 with about 200 stalls, and tickets must be booked in advance.

Some of the best Christmas markets in the UK are a short drive from our front door, and every November we watch guests plan whole breaks around them. Our three holiday homes sit together on the 14 Acres estate at Clipston, on the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire border, and the little market town of Market Harborough is only 10 to 15 minutes away. From here you can reach Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester and Stamford in a morning and still be back in the warm for dinner.

We think the smartest way to do Christmas markets is to stay in the countryside and drive in, rather than book a city hotel for each one. You park once at the estate, sleep in peace, and choose a different market every day without packing and unpacking. That idea runs through all of our boutique stays in the East Midlands countryside, and it works especially well in December, when city centres are crowded and parking fills by lunchtime.

Every date in our list comes from the organiser, the venue or the council running each event, and where 2026 details are not yet published we say so clearly. For each market we cover what to eat, what to do, the local traditions and the places worth visiting on the same day. Drive times are measured from Clipston (LE16 9RF) and are approximate, and groups of up to six often choose The Loft as their base for a long weekend of markets.

Best Christmas Markets in the UK Within Two Hours of the East Midlands

The Christmas markets in the East Midlands and the wider Midlands are some of the largest in the country, and they sit closer together than most visitors expect. Leicester is about 40 minutes from Clipston, Stamford and Burghley about 50 minutes, and Birmingham and Nottingham roughly an hour or a little more. A three-night stay can easily take in three or four very different markets, from a German-style city market to a country house fair.

Each market has its own character and its own timetable. Birmingham and Nottingham run for six or seven weeks, while Burghley, Stamford and the Lincoln Cathedral market last only a few days. Market Harborough and Northampton both hold their lights switch-on events on the same Saturday, 21 November 2026, which makes that weekend a lovely one to stay locally.

If you are choosing between them, think about who is coming. Birmingham and Nottingham suit groups of friends and families who want rides, bars and a big night out, while Burghley, Stamford and Market Harborough suit couples and anyone who prefers crafts, local food and a slower pace. Lincoln and York reward people who love history, with cathedral music and medieval streets as much a part of the day as the stalls.

Ticketed events such as Burghley and the Lincoln Cathedral market sell out, so we always suggest booking those first and building the rest of your break around them. The free city markets are easy to slot in on any day, and they are at their prettiest after dark.

1. Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market 2026

Wooden chalets of the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Victoria Square, Birmingham, lit at night with the Council House dome behind

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from Thursday 5 November to Thursday 24 December 2026, and its organisers describe it as the largest authentic German Christmas market outside Germany or Austria. It celebrates the partnership between Birmingham and Frankfurt, whose own market dates back to 1393. Wooden chalets fill Victoria Square in front of the Council House and carry on along New Street, with craft stalls selling gifts and decorations. Opening hours are 11am to 9pm Monday to Thursday, 11am to 9.30pm on Friday, 10am to 9.30pm on Saturday and 10am to 9pm on Sunday, with a 1pm start on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November.

Food is the reason many people come. Visit Birmingham describes more than 80 Bavarian-style stalls, and you will find German sausages, pretzels, schnitzel, German beer and steaming mugs of Glühwein, the spiced mulled wine that keeps hands warm on a cold evening. Our advice is to eat early, before the evening crowds, and save a sweet treat for the walk back to the car. Because of works on Bennetts Hill and Temple Street, there are no stalls on the stretch of New Street between Nando’s and the Apple Store this year.

Beyond the stalls, Birmingham Cathedral lists a Christmas Market Carol Service on 20 December at 3.30pm, and its four Burne-Jones stained glass windows, restored in 2023, are worth a few quiet minutes away from the crowds. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, close to Victoria Square, is free to enter and open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with its Pre-Raphaelite paintings and the Staffordshire Hoard galleries. The ice rink and big wheel in Centenary Square are run separately, and their 2026 dates and prices had not been confirmed when we checked.

For locals, an evening at the German market is a December ritual, often combined with late shopping in the city centre. New Street station is right beside the market, and the nearest car parks include the council’s Town Hall multi-storey, Grand Central and the Bullring. Weekday visits are calmer, and an early Sunday start gives you the market at its quietest.

What to eat and drink at Birmingham’s Christmas market

  • German sausages from the grill, served in a bread roll.
  • Soft, salted pretzels.
  • Schnitzel, for a proper sit-down lunch.
  • Glühwein, the German mulled wine.
  • German beer at the bars around Victoria Square.

Where to Stay Near Birmingham’s Christmas Market

Birmingham is about 47 miles from our 14 Acres estate, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter by car, so you can enjoy the market into the evening and still sleep in the countryside. The Barn suits a family group, with space for eight and a big living room to come home to.

2. Nottingham Winter Wonderland Christmas Market 2026

Decorated food chalets with garlands and red bows at Nottingham Winter Wonderland in Old Market Square

Nottingham Winter Wonderland opens in Old Market Square on 12 November 2026, and Visit Nottinghamshire lists it running until 31 December, closed on Christmas Day. It is more of a winter festival than a simple market, with decorated chalets selling gifts and food set around the square in front of the domed Council House. Entry is free, and you pay only for the rides and the rink.

The attractions are what make Nottingham special. There is the Sky Skate ice rink, an observation wheel and a toboggan slide, and the alpine Ice Bar serves drinks in glasses made of ice among ice sculptures. For food, the official line-up includes loaded fries and smash burgers from the Loaded chalet, while the Altitude rooftop bar in a glass chalet and the Sur La Piste ski bar are good places to warm up. Families tend to come in the daytime, and the square fills with friends and colleagues in the evenings.

Make time for Nottingham Castle, a short walk away. Its Christmas season runs from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 (closed 25 and 26 December and 1 January), with a Santa’s Grotto at £9 per child including a gift, a Wishing Tree and festive afternoon teas on selected December weekends. Standard castle entry is £18 for an adult, valid for a year, and under-16s go free.

December (to 24 December)10am to 8.30pm10am to 9pm

Nottingham runs tram park and ride sites with around 5,000 free spaces, free with a valid tram ticket bought where you park, and Clifton on the south side of the city is the obvious choice when you arrive from our direction. There are also bus park and ride sites at Queens Drive and the Racecourse at £6 per car.

Where to Stay Near Nottingham’s Christmas Market

Nottingham is about 55 miles from Clipston, roughly an hour and 10 to 20 minutes by car. After an evening on the ice, The Loft is a lovely place to come back to, with two en-suite bedrooms and underfloor heating throughout.

3. Lincoln Christmas Market 2026: The New Cathedral Market

Crowds and market stalls on the cobbled approach to the floodlit west front of Lincoln Cathedral at Christmas

Lincoln was famous for decades for its large street market around the castle and cathedral, but that event no longer runs in its old form. The City of Lincoln Council replaced it with a wider Christmas in Lincoln programme of illuminations and smaller markets, and for 2026 there is something new on the hilltop. Lincoln Cathedral holds its first Christmas market from Thursday 3 to Saturday 5 December, a traditional market set inside the cathedral and its historic grounds at Minster Yard (LN2 1PX).

Entry is by timed session, booked in advance for everyone aged 18 months and over, and tickets are non-refundable. The Thursday twilight session runs from 7pm to 10pm, which is a magical time to see the nave by night. The cathedral has not published a stall list, so for local flavour look out for Lincolnshire specialities in the city: the herby, coarse Lincolnshire sausage, and Lincolnshire plum bread, a fruit loaf spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg that is often eaten with a slice of Lincolnshire Poacher cheese.

Christmas music is a big part of Lincoln’s December. The cathedral’s 2026 programme includes Handel’s Messiah on 21 November, a Viennese Christmas Spectacular on 26 November and Carols by Candlelight on 7 and 8 December at 7pm. Visit Lincoln also lists festive markets and live music in Castle Square through December, with Thor’s Tipi Bar returning, and late-night shopping on selected days.

Across Castle Square, Lincoln Castle is home to an original 1215 Magna Carta and opens from 10am to 4pm in winter, although parts of the Medieval Wall Walk are closed for repairs. We could not find an official park and ride for 2026, so plan on a city car park and the climb up to Minster Yard, which is steep but beautiful after dark.

Lincoln Cathedral Christmas Market at a glance

  • Thursday 3 December: twilight session, 7pm to 10pm.
  • Friday 4 December: 9.30am to 1pm, 2pm to 5.30pm and 6.30pm to 10pm.
  • Saturday 5 December: 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.
  • Pre-booked timed tickets for everyone aged 18 months and over; annual passes not valid.
  • Only assistance dogs are allowed.

Where to Stay Near Lincoln’s Christmas Market

Lincoln is the longest drive in our main list at about 85 miles, roughly an hour and 40 minutes from Clipston, so we would pair it with an evening session and a slow start the next morning. The Cottage is a romantic choice for two, with a soaking bath to come home to.

4. Leicester Christmas Market: Christmas Markets Near Leicester

Leicester Town Hall Square at night with blue Christmas lights strung over the fountain and festive decorations

Leicester is our nearest big city, about 20 miles from Clipston, and it makes an easy half day. Visit Leicester lists the Christmas lights switch-on for Wednesday 18 November, with a 35-metre Wheel of Light and a 44-foot tree by the Clock Tower. The full 2026 programme has not been published yet, so the market dates are still to be confirmed, but last year gives a good idea of what to expect.

In 2025 the Christmas market ran along Gallowtree Gate, with a Christmas fayre in St Peter’s Square at Highcross and an ice rink on Jubilee Square. Visit Leicester singled out the market’s Yorkshire pudding wrap as a festive favourite. Leicestershire is also home to two famous foods worth taking home: the Melton Mowbray pork pie, hand-raised in hot water crust and baked free-standing, and Stilton cheese, which has protected status.

Leicester Cathedral is a short walk from the market and holds the tomb of King Richard III, whose remains were found in an archaeological dig in August 2012 and reburied there in March 2015. This winter the cathedral hosts Light of Stars, a light installation running from 31 October 2026 to 5 January 2027. The King Richard III Visitor Centre is next door, and families with older children often add the National Space Centre, home to the UK’s largest planetarium.

Leicester runs park and ride from Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse. In 2025 buses ran from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, with extra Sunday services in December, and a group ticket for up to five people cost £6. Enderby, off junction 21 of the M1, is the handiest site for us.

Where to Stay Near Leicester’s Christmas Market

Leicester is roughly 40 minutes from the estate, close enough for an afternoon at the market and an early dinner back at Clipston. All three of our homes work well for it, and The Loft is a favourite with groups of friends.

5. Burghley House Christmas Fair 2026: A Country House Christmas Market

Burghley House near Stamford seen across the lake with willows and a cedar tree

The Burghley House Christmas Fair is the country house Christmas market at its best, set in the courtyards and grounds of the great Elizabethan house just outside Stamford. In 2026 it runs from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 November, with around 200 stalls in chalets, pagodas and marquees selling gifts, crafts and festive treats. Opening hours are 9.30am to 4pm on Thursday and Sunday, and 9.30am to 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday for late-night shopping.

Burghley brings together some of the best food and drink producers, and the fair lists traditional mulled wine, rich hot chocolate, warming raclette and sweet and savoury crêpes among its treats. For something special, Afternoon Tea in the Great Hall costs £49.50 per person, must be booked ahead and needs a Fair ticket. A large Victorian carousel, lit up for the season, and a helter skelter keep children happy, and on Friday and Saturday evenings there is a drone show at about 6.20pm, weather permitting.

One thing surprises visitors: the House, the Gardens and Adventure Play are closed while the Fair is on, and the house’s main season ends on 1 November, so this is not a chance to tour the state rooms. The parkland, however, is open daily from 7am until dusk, and a walk under the old trees is the perfect way to start or finish the day. Stamford itself is a few minutes away for lunch.

Tickets are sold in advance only, with no sales on the gate. You choose an arrival timeslot and can stay as long as you like, but there is no re-entry. Standard parking may be on grass up to 500 metres from the entrance, so bring sensible boots.

Where to Stay Near the Burghley Christmas Fair

Burghley is about 34 miles from Clipston, roughly 50 minutes through the Rutland countryside, which makes the late Friday or Saturday opening easy to enjoy. The Barn is ideal for a family weekend, with a big table for a festive dinner when you get back.

6. Stamford Christmas Market 2026

Red Lion Square in Stamford at Christmas with a decorated tree, festive garlands and All Saints Church spire

Stamford is one of the prettiest stone towns in England, and its Christmas market is a one-day event that fills the old streets. Stamford Town Council has confirmed it for Sunday 6 December 2026, from 10am to 4pm, with more than 100 stalls along Ironmonger Street, Broad Street and High Street. There are indoor stalls at the United Reformed Church Hall and Stamford Library, plus live entertainment, festive activities and fairground rides.

Stamford sits right on the Lincolnshire border, so it is a good place to try the county’s festive foods. Lincolnshire plum bread is a fruit tea loaf flavoured with cinnamon and nutmeg, traditionally eaten with cheese such as Lincolnshire Poacher, and the herby Lincolnshire sausage is a winter favourite. The market itself promises festive treats, and the town’s cafés and pubs are busy all day.

The Santa Fun Run takes place in Burghley Park on the same morning, which gives the town a cheerful buzz. Stamford also holds a Christmas lights switch-on in Red Lion Square each November, with the Town Crier, the Mayor, school choirs and late-night shopping, but the 2026 date has not been announced yet.

Leave time to look inside The George of Stamford, an old coaching inn that once belonged to the Abbots of Croyland. In the coaching era around 40 coaches a day passed through Stamford, and the inn’s waiting rooms are still marked London and York. The gallows sign stretching across the road was put up to warn off highwaymen, and Charles I and Sir Walter Scott are among its famous guests.

What to eat in Stamford at Christmas

  • Lincolnshire plum bread, sliced and served with cheese.
  • Lincolnshire Poacher, the county’s best-known cheese.
  • Lincolnshire sausage, coarse and full of herbs.
  • Festive treats from the market stalls on Ironmonger Street and Broad Street.
  • Lunch or a warming drink at The George of Stamford.

Where to Stay Near Stamford’s Christmas Market

Stamford is about 50 minutes from Clipston, the same drive as Burghley. The council has not published special parking arrangements, so arrive before 10am for a space, and come home to The Cottage for a quiet Sunday evening for two.

7. Market Harborough Christmas Lights Switch On and Christmas Markets 2026

Market Harborough town centre on a winter evening with lit shop windows and the historic red-brick corner building on The Square

Our own local market town has one of the friendliest Christmas seasons in the area. According to the Harborough District Council events page, the Market Harborough Christmas Lights Switch On takes place on Saturday 21 November 2026 on The Square, with stalls and activities from 6pm to 9pm and the lights switched on at 7pm. The town’s Christmas tree is sponsored by Market Harborough Building Society.

The switch-on is only the start. The council’s Christmas diary includes late-night shopping, artisan fairs on The Square, farmers’ markets and a Christmas Fayre, plus a festive window competition decided by public vote. That makes Market Harborough a lovely place for a slower day of independent shops, with a hot drink in hand rather than big city crowds.

In the middle of the town stands the Old Grammar School, a timber-framed building raised on posts in 1614 so that the butter market could be held underneath. A few minutes’ walk away, Harborough Museum in the Symington Building, a former corset factory, displays the Hallaton Treasure, which includes over 5,000 coins and a Roman cavalry helmet. Both are good stops between the stalls.

Market Harborough sits in Leicestershire, so look out for a Melton Mowbray pork pie and a wedge of Stilton for the fridge back at the estate. On switch-on night we would arrive around 6pm to see the stalls before the countdown, then walk to dinner in one of the town’s independent restaurants, booked well ahead.

Where to Stay Near Market Harborough’s Christmas Lights

Market Harborough is only 10 to 15 minutes from the estate, so this is the one evening when nobody needs to worry about a long drive home. Any of our three homes is perfect for it, and families often take two side by side.

8. Northampton Christmas Lights Switch On and Winter Market 2026

The Victorian Gothic Guildhall in Northampton with its clock tower and arched facade

Northampton Town Council holds its Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday 21 November 2026, from 12pm to 6pm in the Market Square, with the countdown at 5pm. The afternoon promises a stocking-stuffed line-up of free festive fun, with live stage entertainment, community and trade stalls, festive workshops, pantomime stars, the Mayor and Santa. Santa’s Grotto is at the Grosvenor Shopping Centre.

The switch-on lights five large spruce trees around the town centre and launches Winterfest, sponsored by West Northamptonshire Council, with the full programme still to be announced. Last winter the town also had a covered real-ice rink in the Market Square from 4 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, but plans for a 2026 rink have not been confirmed, so check nearer the time if skating is on your list.

For a cultural stop, 78 Derngate is a terraced house remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 for W. J. Bassett-Lowke, his last major commission. It is the only place outside Scotland where his mature style can be seen in its original setting, and it is open until 21 December 2026. The Guildhall, a Victorian Gothic landmark, is a short walk from the Market Square.

  • 78 Derngate: open until 21 December 2026.

Where to Stay Near Northampton’s Christmas Lights

Northampton is about 16 miles from Clipston, roughly half an hour by car. Because its switch-on falls on the same day as Market Harborough’s, you can enjoy the 5pm countdown in Northampton and still be in Market Harborough for the lights at 7pm, then home to the estate a few minutes later.

9. York Christmas Market 2026: Worth the Longer Trip

Garland-trimmed chalets and shoppers at York Christmas Market on Parliament Street with lights in the trees

York is beyond the two-hour mark from Clipston, but its Christmas market is one many of our guests want to see at least once. Visit York confirms it will run from 12 November to 21 December 2026, from 10.30am to 7pm, Wednesday to Monday. It is closed every Tuesday as a rest day and closes at 5pm on Monday 21 December.

Alpine chalets line Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, and more than 80% of the traders come from Yorkshire, which makes it a good place for local food, crafts and presents you will not find elsewhere. The market promises seasonal food and festive treats, and the full trader list is still to be published. York’s medieval streets, including the timber-framed Shambles, are only a few minutes’ walk away.

York Minster is the heart of the city’s Christmas. Its Christmas Tree Festival runs from 28 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, and the Minster’s carol services are some of the most atmospheric in England. Visit York also lists a Christmas walking tour from 20 November to 24 December, and if you have a car and a second day, Castle Howard presents A Dickens of a Christmas from 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Where to Stay for York’s Christmas Market

York is about 137 miles from Clipston, roughly two hours and 40 minutes each way, so we would only do it as a long day trip with an early start on a Wednesday to Monday. It works best as the finale of a longer stay, with gentler local days either side.

The weekend of 27 to 29 November 2026 is a lovely time for a Christmas market break, because Burghley, Birmingham and Nottingham are all open at once and Nottingham Castle’s Christmas season begins on the Saturday. This itinerary uses the estate as a single base, so you unpack on Friday and leave on Sunday afternoon with nothing more than a short drive each day.

Families with young children often find one big market a day is plenty, with afternoons back on the estate.

The weekend of 20 to 22 November works just as well for a more local break. On Saturday 21 November you can join the Northampton countdown at 5pm and the Market Harborough switch-on at 7pm, with Leicester or Birmingham on the Sunday. Groups with more energy can add Stamford on Sunday 6 December or the Lincoln Cathedral market from 3 to 5 December for a second weekend.

The Loft: A Christmas Market Base for Six

The Loft is a converted Victorian stable, clad in timber, with a large dining balcony looking over the water on the estate. You enter on the ground floor and climb to an open living space with a full-height triangular window onto the fields, which is a beautiful place to watch a frosty morning before a day at the markets. It is 135 square metres in all, with two bedrooms, each with a 180cm super king bed that can split into twins and its own en-suite.

After a long day in Birmingham or Nottingham, the details make the difference: Hypnos mattresses and Egyptian cotton linen, walk-in rain showers, a full bath in the family en-suite and heated towel rails. The Cottage: A Romantic Christmas Market Hideaway

The Cottage is a converted Victorian dovecote of 65 square metres for up to four guests, with views over the rolling hills. Its open-plan master suite has a 180cm super king bed that can split into two singles, a walk-in rain shower and a soaking bath, and there is a double sofa bed in the living area. On a December evening, with the windows glowing and the fields dark around it, it is hard to think of a cosier place to come home to.

Outside there is a private dining deck with a gas barbecue, and inside you have underfloor heating, double glazing, Netflix and an Xbox for film nights. Smart lock entry makes a late return from a twilight market session simple, and the Type 2 EV charger means the car is ready for the next day’s drive.

Christmas Market Breaks in the UK: Parking, Park and Ride and Booking Tips

The biggest difference between a relaxed Christmas market day and a stressful one is usually parking. City car parks near the markets fill quickly on Saturdays in December, and queues to leave can be long after dark. Park and ride is the calmest option in Nottingham, Leicester and York, while in Birmingham the train into New Street drops you right beside the stalls.

The second thing to sort early is tickets. The big city markets are free to walk around, but Burghley and the Lincoln Cathedral market are ticketed with timed entry, and rinks, wheels, grottos and festive afternoon teas need booking too. We would book those first, then fit the free markets around them, and finally book a table for dinner on the busiest evenings.

Christmas market checklist

  • Book Burghley tickets and parking together, as there are no sales on the gate.
  • Book Lincoln Cathedral market tickets for everyone aged 18 months and over.
  • Check York is open, as the market closes every Tuesday.
  • Use tram park and ride in Nottingham and bus park and ride in Leicester and York.
  • Pack warm layers, waterproof boots and a reusable cup for mulled wine.
  • Keep one evening free for the Market Harborough lights at 7pm on 21 November.

Think about the weather too. A December market day can be cold and wet, so plan an indoor stop for each city: the museum in Birmingham, the castle in Nottingham, the cathedral in Lincoln or Leicester, and the Minster in York. Children enjoy the markets far more with a warm break in the middle of the day, and it gives everyone a chance to dry off before the lights come on.

Finally, give yourself time at the end of each day. Christmas markets are at their prettiest after dark, so a late afternoon arrival and an early evening drive home often gives the best of both. Within about an hour you are back at Clipston, with the car parked by the door and the rest of the evening ahead of you.

A Note from Susan

“Our December guests tell us the markets were wonderful, but the best part was coming back to a warm house in the countryside, with the car parked outside and nobody rushing. We love seeing families plan a different market every day from the same front door.”
